Mission Statement

"How can there be peace without people understanding each other and how can this be if they do not know each other?"
- Lester B. Pearson

Harmony Day recognizes that citizens of the Central Okanagan come from all over the world. It provides a yearly opportunity for the community of School District 23 to celebrate our culturally diverse society and commit ourselves to mutual respect.

WHy have harmony day?

WHY IS HARMONY DAY IMPORTANT?
Harmony Day helps us:
  • Create sensitivity to and respect for differences
  • Commit to our district values - Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Empathy and Fairness
  • Celebrate our diverse and harmonious society
  • Say ‘no’ to discrimination
Harmony Day allows us to focus on the values which underpin our mission:
"To educate students in a safe inspirational learning environment where every student develops the knowledge and skills to be a lifelong learner and a healthy productive member of our global society."

HARMONY DAY – WHERE TO START?
  • Please explore the options for your class, school and/ or district

AT THE END OF THE DAY, HARMONY DAY SHOULD:
  • Impact the individual, the classroom, your whole school and your community
  • Meet the needs of your particular community
  • Include a review/critique of our District Racism Free Declaration
  • Involve students in leadership opportunities

TO EXTEND HARMONY DAY:
  • Connect with events happening in our community for Global Citizen Events
  • Continue to involve students in leadership opportunities
  • Celebrate the diversity of our people and programs with an event during Education Week.
